Sports Injuries

The osteopathic hands-on approach and time spent with the patient discussing previous injuries and future prevention, proves beneficial with sports related injuries. It is important not to look at an area in isolation.

When considering a hamstring injury for instance neural tension, low back and sacroiliac mechanics, gait, opposing and synergistic muscles are all relevant in addition to the types of sport the individual is involved in.

By finding the cause of the problem the injury can be prevented long term. It could be as simple as the person having a sedentary desk job where sitting for long periods causes shortening of the hamstrings.

At the Mount Osteopathic Centre we have a number of methods of strengthening depending on the severity of the injury. These include therabands, dumbell and Swiss Ball excercises all aimed at improving muscle and joint function. Nerve feedback is seen as important in preventing future injuries. This is where the Swiss Ball proves extremely useful in stimulating muscle control as well as strength.

Sport specific excercises are all included as part of your rehabilitation. The use of specific exercises relating to your injury, job, or sport will be given to assist in your speedy recovery.

With acute injuries care is taken not to further inflame the tissues which can occur in the first 24-48 hours. This is the time to use RICE (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate).

At the clinic acupuncture works well in reducing early swelling.
