What's the difference between an Osteopath & a Chiropractor?

All practitioners work slightly differently. In general a chiropractor will take an xray of your spine and assess where subluxations (bones out of place) occur and will work to straighten these out. Osteopaths are more interested in how you move, which includes the muscles and tendons around the joints as well as the joints themselves.

What training do osteopaths receive?

Osteopaths in New Zealand currently receive 5 years full time training. This includes a degree in health sciences followed by a masters in Osteopathic Medicine.

Are the Osteopaths clinics registered?

The recent Health Professional Competency Act made it compulsory for all Osteopaths to be registered. It is no longer possible for anyone with inadequate qualifications to call themselves and Osteopath.

What ongoing training do Osteopaths receive?

All Osteopaths are expected to update their skills. The current requirement is 25 CPE points per year. At the Mount Osteopathic Centre we place a great deal of emphasis on additional ongoing training.

Do Osteopaths put bones back into place?

Manipulation is only one tool Osteopaths have available to them. The 'pop' that is heard when the joints are manipulated is thought to be the result of rapid traction to the joints causing a vacuum and eventual pop of an air bubble. The result is that there is more mobility in the joint.

What happens on your first visit?

A full consultation involves asking how the injury occured, details of this and other injuries, your medical history, an examination of your pain free movements, orthopaedic exams and an examination of the feel of the tissues for any tension or restrictions. After this has been done treatment can be given.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on the severity of the injury and how long you have had it. The aim of all our teatments is to help get you through the acute stage of the injury as soon as possible, then provide you with the tools to maintain your recovery though avoiding aggravators and doing exercises.

What does treatment involve?

Most treatments will involve work to the soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia). Mobilisation and manipulation are other tools that may be used dependant on your injury, age, medical history and requirements. Advice will also be given on lifestyle changes that may be required to hasten recovery and avoid further problems.

What is the cost of treatment?

Our costs are currently...
Non ACC $60, CSC(commumity services card holder) Non ACC $55, Student $45
ACC Surcharge $35, CSC ACC Surcharge $30, Student ACC Surcharge $25

Where are you located?

The Mount Osteopathic Clinic at Health4U is located at 42 Gloucester Rd, Mount Maunganui.

Am I expected to undress?

Depending on the injury site you may be asked to remove some of your clothing down to your underwear. We do have gowns available for your use.

Can I see my Osteopath of choice?

You are able to see which ever Osteopath is most suited to you. We currently have 2 males with slightly different areas of interest and expertise. If you are unsure who is most suitable ask the receptionist or call for a clinic brochure. Our staff page on this website also gives a practitioner profile.

Is the clinic ACC registered?

We are an ACC provider clinic. You do not need to see your GP prior to coming to the clinic.

What age patients do they treat?

Anyone from young children to centurians have been treated at the clinic. If you are at either end of this scale, please mention it to the receptionist on booking so you are given the most suitable Osteopath.

Do the practitioners have any particular skills or interests?

As mentioned above each practitioner has their own area of expertise or interest. If you have a particular problem ask the receptionist. If you would still like to know more information leave your phone number at reception and one of the Osteopaths will call you when they get a chance.
